The Holy Quran has numerous times revealed the conversation between Allah swt and Iblis. Allah swt commands Iblis to prostrate in front of Adam but Iblis refuses to prostrate and arrogantly says, آنا خیر منھ or I am better than him,” and further says that, “You created me from fire and him from clay.” To that Allah sw

I’m better than him” is not just an expression that Iblis haughtily pronounced to refuse to prostrate to Adam. If we really ponder, it’s an ideology, a philosophy, an outlook, a viewpoint, an attitude of an individual or a nation about itself and of others. It is a scale, a demarcation for which color, race, sex, creed, class, et al, is better. It is the suppression of the basic rights of others. It is oppression of others through fear, terror and sometimes killing. It is the horrendous acts like extra judicial killing, preemptive killing, concentration camps, and ghettos. It is the subjugation of people into slavery, colonies, extermination. It is the history of brutality, killing, mayhem and genocide. And it is also a basis of the power struggle and conflicts, the world order and whatever you like to call it.

And yes, it reaches a point where a human and Satan are the same as one assumes superioroty over the other.

The brutal act of killing of George Floyd and Ahmaud Arbery uncovers the same ideology of “I’m better than him.” There is a growing unrest sparked after the death of George Floyd in different states of the United States. Whether the reaction is warranted or not, it speaks volume about the discrimination and injustice meted out to the race not over the years but over the centuries!
